WebView

SmartSignage has the WebView since version 2.1. WebView reads the URL file containing the website address and displays the website. The URL file is placed in the SmartSignage data folder. When the web page is displayed, you can operate it with a mouse.
You can change the display behavior by adding settings to the URL file. The following items can be set.

  • Show or hide scrollbars
  • Whether to load the page at the start of the display or to load it in advance
  • Zoom in / out
  • Position (move the position within SmartSignage)
  • Size as web browser
    - Partial display is possible when used in combination with position

Refer to Additional Settings for details on how to make these settings.

SmartSignage’s WebView uses QtWebEngine. It is based on Chromium, so it can display many pages that can be viewed in Google Chrome. However, some functions such as H.264 format video playback do not work. (Depends on the standard QtWebEngine function.)

Create URL file

URL files can be created in some ways.

Use a web browser

If you use Google Chrome or Firefox, you can easily create a URL file. It can not be created with Microsoft Edge.

  1. Open a page using a web browser.
At this time, the web browser is windowed so that the desktop can be seen.

  2. Drag and drop the icon on the left side of the web browser’s address bar to the desktop.

  3. The URL file is created on the desktop.
The file name is the title of the web page with the extension .url. However, the extension .url is invisible on the desktop and the file explorer.

Even in Ubuntu, desktop environments such as GNOME can be created in the same way. The file extension created is .desktop instead.

Create shortcut on Windows

In Windows shortcut creation, you can create a URL file.

  1. On the desktop, select “New” > “Shortcut” from the context menu displayed by right-clicking.

  2. The Create Shortcut Wizard is shown.

  3. Enter the URL of the web page you want to view in the “Type the location of the item:” input field.
The URL is an address starting with http:// or https://. For example, when displaying the page of Fukuneko Inc., it looks like http://www.fukuneko.com/.
After input, press the “Next” button.

  4. Enter any name in the “Type a name for this shortcut:” input field.
The name entered here will be the file name. After entering, push the “Finish” button.

  5. The URL file is created on the desktop.
Double-click the file to launch the browser for confirmation. This file also has the .url extension, but it is invisible on the desktop or file explorer. After entering, push the “Finish” button.

Create with a text editor

URL files are text files in INI format, so they can be created using any text editor. You can use files created in Windows with the Ubuntu version of SmartSignage, or files created with Ubuntu in Windows.

On Windows

You can use Notepad on Windows. All you need is the section [InternetShortcut] and the URL entry.

  4. Select “Save As” from the menu.

  5. A dialog box will be shown, so select an arbitrary save destination.

  8. When “Save” is pressed, a URL file is created.
The created file can not see the extension .url on the desktop or file explorer. Double-click the file to launch a browser and check the link destination.

This created file can not see the extension .desktop on the desktop.

Additional Settings

You can change the WebView behavior by adding settings to the URL file.
The way is to add the [Fdse] section to the URL file and add the necessary entries.
Use the following as entries:

  • ScrollBars ….. true | false [DEFAULT: false]
Sets whether to show or hide the scroll bars. In the case of true, the scroll bar is displayed. If it is false it will be hidden. The default is hidden with false.

  • LoadOnStart ….. true | false [DEFAULT: false]
Set whether to load the page at the start of display. If you set true, the page will be loaded after switching to web content. false will load the page when the previous content is displayed.
You may want to set it to true when dealing with pages such as animations that start at the same time as loading the page.

  • ZoomFactor ….. Scaling factor. Range of 0.1 to 5.0 [Default is 1.0 and no zoom]
Display the page enlarged or reduced. As it is scaled based on the upper left, if you want to display the desired position, adjust along with the display position and size.

  • Top ….. Display position “top”. Specified in pixel units. [Default is 0]
The top of SmartSignage is 0. The numbers increase bottomward. The numbers decrease topwards. Setting a negative value will cause the display to be truncated at the top.

  • Left ….. Display position “left”. Specified in pixel units. [Default is 0]
The left of SmartSignage is 0. The numbers increase rightward. The numbers decrease leftwards. Setting a negative value will cause the display to be truncated at the left.

  • Width ….. Browser width. Specified in pixel units. [Default is 0]
A value of 0 will automatically adjust to the width of SmartSignage. Specify when you want to display a part of the page using with Top and Left.

  • Height ….. Browser height. Specified in pixel units. [Default is 0]
A value of 0 will automatically adjust to the height of SmartSignage. Specify when you want to display a part of the page using with Top and Left.
